5 Top Tips To Pick A Muay Thai Gym In Thailand

There are plenty of things to consider before choosing a Muay Thai gym in Thailand. Below are my top 5 tips.

Location

When picking a Muay Thai gym, you must consider the location.

When it comes to choosing your location for training Muay Thai in Thailand, there are four common options. Bangkok, the North of Thailand, Pattaya and the Islands.

Bangkok is where most of the high-level action takes place. The Islands and Pattaya are tailored more towards beginners and farang fighters. Chaing Mai in the north of Thailand has an active regional circuit and is a good option for intermediate Muay Thai fighters.

Bangkok and Pattaya are known for their notorious nightlife, and party atmosphere. Fighters who are easily distracted should consider a quitter destination such as Chiang Mai or Pai.

Muay Thai Experience

All of the gyms on this list cater to foreign fighters and tourists. Experienced Nak Muay would be more suited in a gym that has a strong stable of fighters. Beginners should look for a gym that offers classes aimed more towards fundamentals or fitness.

Accommodation

Martial Arts in MMA

When it comes to accommodation, you have three main options. Rent an apartment, stay in on-site gym accommodation or book a hotel/hostel.

Booking a hotel room is a good option for your first few days whilst you are finding your feet and choosing a Muay Thai gym.

Renting an apartment is the most cost-effective and flexible option for fighters looking to stay long term. You can rent an apartment for as little as $500 a month. Make sure you check out a few different apartments and locations before committing to a long term lease.

Muay Thai Instructors

Every gym has a different style of training dictated by the owner and instructors. For example FA group in Bangkok are known for their clinch fighting and focus heavily on this during training.

Gyms such as Tiger Muay Thai have a large number of students and trainers, so training is not as personal as training at a rural gym in Thailand.

In smaller gyms, fighters often work with one trainer, so it’s vital to build a good relationship with all the instructors when joining a new gym.

Try Before You Commit!

Don’t sign up for an expensive training package without trying the gym first.

Make sure that you have tried a few different gyms and enjoy the Muay Thai training before you coming to a long term contract.

Don’t Put On Tiger Oil Before You Go To The Toilet

Okay so that was tip number 6. Just don’t do it, trust me.

5 Top Questions – Training Muay Thai in Thailand

We have put together a list of common FAQ’s on training Muay Thai in Thailand.

Should I Fight In Thailand?

To fight or not to fight is a question that’s thrown around gyms throughout Thailand. Fighting in Thailand can be a life-changing experience, if done correctly.

If you are planning to fight in Thailand, make sure you train at a well-established gym that has a stable of foreign fighters. I don’t recommend fighting in Thailand unless you trust your trainer and the gym you’re training at.

Also, don’t forget your travel insurance.

How Much Does It Cost To Train Muay Thai In Thailand?

Prices of training camps in Thailand vary depending on the facilities on offer. A rough range for a months training is from 6000 Baht to 15000 Baht.

A full month’s Muay Thai training at Tiger Muay Thai costs around 16,000 TBH. In comparison a month at Sit Je Mam in Pai costs around 10,000.

Where Can I Watch Muay Thai Fights In Thailand?

Max Muay Thai in Pattaya

In Bangkok you need to visit one of the two main boxing gyms in the City. Rajadamnerm has hosted hundreds of the best fights in Muay Thai history after opening its doors in December 1945. Alternatively, Lumpinee stadium is run by the Thai army and is equally as prestigious as Rajadamnerm.

There are Muay Thai boxing stadiums all over Thailand. The chances are, if you are visiting a destination popular with tourists, there will be a Muay Thai stadium showing local fights.

What Equipment Do I Need For Muay Thai?

You can pick up Muay Thai equipment in stores located around Thailand. Alternatively, gyms often have their own range of Muay Thai equipment on stock. I recommend buying the best quality equipment in your budget.

Below are some of the key items to pick up.

What Does A Muay Thai Class in Thailand Consist of?

The Thai style of Muay Thai training is different from the western style of training. Thai fighters train two times a day, six times per week.

Thai sessions typically consist of an optional run to begin. After the run, the session consists of shadowboxing, bag work and pad work. For experienced fighters, the session ends with clinching and sparring.
