8 Fantastic Benefits of Taekwondo Training

Taekwondo is an explosive martial art characterized by the masterful use of kicks for self-defense and effective attacks. But beyond the explosive power, practicing the art offers numerous physical and mental benefits. Here are the most prominent ones:

1. Improved Flexibility

Flexibility measures our ability to move through a specific range of motion freely and without pain. Our ability to move depends on joint health and our muscles’ ability to lengthen. For example, you might have excellent hip joint mobility, but if your adductors lack flexibility, this will prevent you from moving freely.

When most people consider flexibility, they think of activities like static stretching and yoga. And while both are excellent ways to work on your flexibility, they are far from your only options.

Taekwondo training is incredibly beneficial for your flexibility because it stretches your tissues and mobilizes your joints much like you would with other modalities. There is a large arsenal of movements that gradually improve your flexibility by subjecting your tissues to dynamic movements.

Over time, many taekwondo fighters find themselves having superior flexibility without doing anything special.

2. Weight Loss

Weight loss is one of the most confusing topics in the fitness world. Each day, countless people share their unique opinion on what it takes to lose weight effectively. Some tout diets; others push training plans. Some tout a special supplement; others push a unique eating pattern.

Look for information long enough, and you’ll be sure to overwhelm yourself.

But do you know what? Weight loss is incredibly simple to understand. Of course, this doesn’t mean it’s easy

Weight loss comes down to creating and sustaining an energy deficit – consuming fewer calories than you burn. That way, you force your body to break down fat for energy, and you find yourself getting smaller and leaner.

Taekwondo training is excellent for weight loss because it leads to a significant calorie burn. Each workout presents you with energy-demanding activities that help you burn hundreds of calories per session. Over the course of a typical training week, this can mean burning thousands of extra calories, creating a deficit, and losing fat.

3. Learning Self-Defense

Of course, no taekwondo benefits list would be complete without this one. Taekwondo has earned a reputation as an excellent self-defense martial art. Thanks to the heavy use of kicks, proficient taekwondo practitioners can easily ward off attacks, maintain distance from attackers, and deliver devastating, conflict-ending blows.

This is because of two reasons:

First, your legs are longer than your arms, which makes them the ideal body part to use before your opponent has the chance to come close. In most cases, an attacker would attempt to grab or punch you. But by using your legs, you can prevent that from happening early on.

Second, your lower body is home to two of the largest muscle groups in your body – the quadriceps and glutes. Your quads are the powerful knee extensors, and your glutes are the primary hip extensors of the body. Using them together allows you to produce a lot of force and land devastating strikes.

4. Improved Mental Health

Mental health is a complex topic with many contributing factors. Researchers are yet to paint a comprehensive picture, but one thing is clear:

In dozens of studies, researchers have found a direct link between regular physical activity and well-being. Folks who move more are happier, more optimistic, more motivated, and more enthusiastic about the future.

The great thing about Taekwondo training is that, like many other types of physical activity, it also improves our mental health. But unlike many other forms of exercise, Taekwondo is fun, engaging, and provides trainees with a true sense of progression. As a result, trainees are much more likely to have fun, stay engaged, and maintain their mental health for years, even decades.

Though it might seem like a macho pursuit, physical strength is vital for everyone. It makes our everyday life easier, allows us to maintain good posture, makes us more athletic, and contributes to our well-being.

Plus, some research finds a strong correlation between physical strength and quality of life in older adults.

Taekwondo training is a fantastic way to get stronger because workouts feature demanding activities that push us hard and require significant effort. For example, simply by practicing the many strikes and kicks, you get to engage the major muscle groups in your body and make them stronger. This includes your quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, entire back, shoulders, chest, and arms.

6. Improved Mental Toughness And Problem Solving Skills

Though the link might seem unlikely, martial arts are a fantastic way to become more resilient and improve your problem-solving skills.

At their core, martial arts are deeply challenging. To get good at Taekwondo, you need to experience and overcome hundreds of failures. To become great, you need to overcome thousands. Each failure brings a small lesson and reinforces your mental toughness. It shows you that a mistake or failure is not the end of the world and that you can still keep going. The more you practice, the tougher you get, and the less you find giving up to be an option.

In the same way, Taekwondo makes you an expert problem-solver. Each bout with a training partner presents you with all sorts of problems you need to overcome. Is your opponent stronger or quicker? Problem. Are they more skilled? Problem. They anticipate your attacks and dodge them perfectly? Yes, another problem.

The more you immerse yourself in martial arts, the more you internalize the art of recognizing and overcoming problems quickly.

There is nothing more rewarding than finding a group of like-minded people who support one another and improve together.
